A Week In The Dordogne

When you fly into Bergerac, it takes only 20 minutes to drive from there to this very beautiful and secure house, yet a stone's throw away from the centre of the pretty little village of Beaumont du Perigord. The village is close enough to be really convenient but just the right distance away to not feel like you're right in the middle of it. The handful of little patisseries, butchers, restaurants and cafe/bars situated around the village square are perfect to pick up groceries from or to relax outside of. A slightly larger supermarket is just a five minute drive up the road. The house itself offered plenty of space, so you never feel like you are under one another's feet. The interior decor is clean and modern, ideal if you were staying out of season or had a rainy day inside. The pool area is gorgeous, peaceful and a great sun trap. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and perfect for long walks or runs. Beaumont area presents a thousand good reasons to explore it, with its attractive bastides (Beaumont, Molières), its picturesque villages (Monsac, Montferrand) and its well-preserved historical buildings, both small (dovecotes, wash-places), and large (castle, churches). Some sites are not to be missed : the abbey of St Avit Senieur, classified as a UNESCO world heritage site, the fortified church of Beaumont, Bannes and Montferrand castles... where echoes remain of the sound of battle. The bastide of Beaumont du Perigord was built by the English in the 12th c during the 100 years war between France and England, thus the area is steeped in history. Beaumont is situated in the middle of the bastides (fortified towns), each one being placed about 16 kms from the other which equated to about a day's march for the defending armies. The bastides of Montpazier, Villereal, Cadouin, Issigeac and Molieres are all within such a circle. Further afield there is Sarlet (50kms) and Bergerac (25kms). Bergerac International Airport is a mere 25 mins away. Most of the local towns and villages host a weekly market where fresh local produce and local wines are sold. Beaumont host a market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. If you want to know more about this property, please visit our website : http://www.mydordogneselfcatering.com
